A ship of the line was a type of naval warship built from the 17th century until the mid-nineteenth century during the Age of Sail. The line of battle was a naval tactic that relied on two columns of opposing warships manoeuvring to volley fire with their cannons along their broadsides. When opposing ships could both fire from their broadsides, the opponent with more guns firing — and hence more firepower – usually held the upper hand.
